The children are one month into their second term at the Jubilee School and absorbed in their lessons. They also have been observing the completion of the Dormitory Buildings and Matron's House. We're not kidding when we say that the excitement is building! It has been very encouraging to have things continue to move along as planned. The workers are now in the interior plastering phase of completing the Dorms.
Gideon continues to keep our administrative matters on track and put us in good stead with the Kenyan Educational Authorities. Aaron, Fr. Symon's adult nephew and on site construction supervisor, has also facilitated the acquisition of two more acres of land that abut the Jubilee School premises, under Fr. Symon's guidance and approval. This now brings the total acreage for the Jubilee School premises to10 acres which we think is terrific. Given the location of the newly acquired land, Fr. Symon thinks it will be the ideal location for the school's playground. A few more trees will be uprooted in order to clear the land.
Also another noteworthy development is that a computer has been installed at the Jubilee School and Fr. Symon has been able to communicate via e-mail with administrators and staff there. He is looking forward to installing Skype next. I confess to being totally impressed by this! SafariCom is able to provide wireless service to the Jubilee School, similar to how we access cell phone signals. So as long as the signals are strong, we are in great shape. Fr. Symon had the school install the computer that he had at his home and advises that, although service can be a little spotty at times, it is wonderful when it is fully available. We will keep you posted on the children's reaction to seeing Fr. Symon via skype on the computer. No doubt it will be received with great excitement. (Fr. Symon was advised that the children were delighted to see printed, digital photos of themselves...and of course, those who did not initially find their photos were quickly assured that they would have them asap for their parents to see.)
Tomorrow, June 1st, will be a holiday in Kenya. It is called Madaraka and celebrates the date the British relinquished control in Kenya. Although the children who board will be at the Jubilee School, there will not be classes. So enjoy the day!
Please feel free to e-mail us with any questions you may have. Until next time...asante sana.
